Heathers

Trailer

I'd heard about this movie a lot, but only really because I know of Shannon Doherty from her role on Charmed and saw that she was in Heathers. I'm inclined to make the comparison of this movie to a way more mature version of Mean Girls mixed with Cruel Intentions, because that's the best way I think I can describe it. Basically there is a group of three popular people at high school all named Heather who use the main character, Veronica, to do their bidding. Veronica craves to be popular like they are so she pretty much just does whatever they want her to. That all changes when she meets J.D. who is the school's crazy guy. He's been kicked out of a lot of high schools, and this is just his newest temporary place.

Veronica secretly hates the Heathers so with J.D. she begins to plot their deaths. It starts out just as imagining their deaths, but ends up being much more. Part of why Heathers is so good is because it's entire concern is about society and the ways it influences teens in high school. For a movie done in 1989 it's really dark, and they had to even use an alternate ending than was originally planned because the first ending was deemed to be much too dark for a movie. Overall, I really liked the dark undertones of the movie along with the interjected humor.

I give it: 9/10
